Wingerdweg, Amsterdam

In the future, this beautiful property in Amsterdam North will be redeveloped into apartments, while retaining the characteristic office building. The telephone exchange located behind it will be replaced with residential units. Currently, the building, which dates back to 1924, still houses a telephone exchange, but it will be gradually dismantled. A notable feature is the granite facade stones from 1923, depicting 'automatic telephoning': a man and a woman talking to each other through the new telephone exchange. This system allowed people to call another subscriber directly, without the need for an operator—'DOEHETZELF' (Do It Yourself). These letters can still be seen on the front facade.
